 Course Description: This course surveys U.S. history from the end of the Civil War to recent times.  Students will explore major themes and broad changes in the making of the modern United States by studying its diverse peoples, social movements, political institutions, economic patterns, and cultural developments.  Particular attention will be paid to shifting race, class, and gender relations, changing ideas of citizenshiop, U.S. expansion at home and abroad, and expressions of popular culture.
